Some eating disorder facts:
Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorders are potentially life-threatening illnesses which are both psychological and physical in nature. These disorders are characterized by a range of abnormal and harmful eating behaviors which are motivated by unhealthy beliefs, perceptions and expectations concerning their weight, body shape and eating habits. For someone suffering from an eating disorder, they don’t see the dangerously thin person they have become or are becoming when they look in a mirror. They see someone fat and out of control, and the eating disorder is their destructive and dysfunctional way of controlling their powerful fear of gaining weight. The harm to the young person and their family is extreme and painful.
Most of our patients come to us in a crisis situation and the eating disorder has become a survival situation. There is pressure from television, movies, magazines and peer pressure to be thin. For some of them, there is a fear of growing up and taking on adult responsibilities, while others have always played the role of the “perfect child” in the family, and the eating disorder is an extreme manifestation of their need to be “perfect”. Others have endured a major loss and are in deep psychological pain. There are many reasons for young people to punish themselves by restricting or abusing food, but without treatment, the results are often deadly.
Easting disorders ARE treatable, and the treatment team is comprised of experts on eating disorders including: psychiatrists, child psychologists, social workers and community support workers. Treatment is 24 hours a day in a warm and supportive environment, and a wide variety of activities are involved in curing including: private and group therapy, music, art and dram therapies, movement and sport and animal-assisted therapy. There is also a schooling department where the patients attend a full day of school, taught by a professional staff of highly qualified educators.
Family visiting hours are every day, and once the treatment has progressed to the point where the patient is ready, weekend family outings are encouraged. An integral part of the treatment involves as many family members as possible, and a large variety of hotels are available for accompanying family within walking distance of the treatment center.
The majority of the staff is Russian-speaking and families are welcome to ask questions and consult with our professional team prior to their arriving for treatment.
